This is a page detailing some of the work I did to install a color LCD display panel in the driver's side sun visor, in preparation for an MP3 Player/GPS Navigation System based on a laptop. The screen was relatively inexpensive, and was purchased from Parts Express. Please feel free to email and ask. Comments are always welcome.
Just a quick picture of the LCD kit as I received it. As it happens, the screen runs off of 12 volts DC, and uses an RCA input jack.
Another picture of the LCD kit, showing the circuit board, RCA in jack, and the frame that secures the LCD to the circuit board. I had to remove the LCD panel from this frame in order to recess it in the sun visor.
In this picture, you can see how I have traced along the outside edge of the circuit board and LCD panel, and simply cut out the vinyl covering on the sun visor. The only caveat in this process is to make sure you mark your cuts while the visor is installed in the car, to ensure the LCD panel ends up being level. Underneath the vinyl, you will find foam and a stiff cardboard backing. I simply cut through this to allow enough room for the LCD and the circuit board.
Here, you can see where I pulled the power, ground, and RCA wires through the edge of the visor, right next to the hinge point. They will be covered in gray heat shrink tubing to match the interior colors, and will be hidden behind the A pillar cover.
In this picture, you can see how cleanly the LCD and circuit board fit into the sun visor. All that is needed at this point is to trim out the LCD panel and reupholster the sun visor. I will be using a cloth similar to the headliner material to do just that, and will reupolster the passenger visor to match.
