This is just a quick page detailing how to change out your headlamp bulbs. The bulbs in the 1993-2001 Impreza are known variously by 9003, H4, and HB2, but they are all the same. Please feel free to email with any questions. Comments are always welcome.
Start with the hood up, and look for the black headlamp connectors. The have "locks" holding them to the headlamp- you need to press at the 3 and 9 o'clock positions to unlock them, and while squeezing, pull away from the headlamp. In the photo, you can see my fingers in the proper position to squeeze the locks.
The next photos were taken on a headlamp removed from the car, so you could more clearly see how to proceed. There is a rubber boot on the back of the lamp that helps seal the bulb. Pull this off.
With the boot off, you can see what holds the bulb in place; it is a very simple spring that holds it in. Push in the direction of the arrows, and then pivot the spring down.
With the spring clear, just pull out the bulb. Make sure to clean the glass of the new lamp thoroughly with glass cleaner, as oil spots will quickly blow out a new bulb (they get very hot when on). Reverse the removal process, and you are done.
